Remy got a new pair of BOOTS!

Remy, my 100+lb Rhodesian Ridgeback/Boxer Mix has bad hips! He has actually had hip and knee problems since he was a puppy. Now at his ripe old age of 8 he has picked up a new problem which causes him to drag his back feet. Canine degenerative myelopathy.

From WikiPedia Canine degenerative myelopathy.

Sometimes, when this happens in older dogs, especially large breeds like Remy it is due to a loss of function in the nerves that supply the back legs. Since this has been happening he has already wore his nails on his hind feet down to the point where they were bleeding. The first time he came back from his walk with his nails bleeding it looked like a crime scene! Blood on the porch, couch, wood floors, area rugs, carpets. EVERYWHERE! Apparently we didn’t know it happened until we noticed the blood everywhere! My poor baby.

Remys first pair of boots!

Immediately, I got on the internet and started looking into ways to stop this. I came across a post that mentioned buying a pair of boots for my boy! To protect his nails (not cure his disease). So I decided to do just that.

Old Boots

You all know the drill by now. Yup, I got on amazon and looked for a pair that would fit him. Being such a large dog can you imagine how big his feet are?

I came across a pair that looked big enough and I bought them. I really should have done rush shipping because the next day on his walk the same thing happened to his nails.

Finally when the boots came Remy was skeptical at first but let us put them on his feet. We only put them on the back feet and then off on a walk we went. They worked. They stayed on and they protected his toe nails.

But just after one walk they already had a lot of wear in the front. Like I mentioned we only put them on his back feet and within a week the first two were almost ruined with a large hole in the front. We had to put duct tape to keep his nails from poking through and bleeding again. Day after day more wear and tear and more tape. Until we finally gave up with the first two and started with the second two.

Again the same thing. A hole in the front. Here comes the duct tape. And we also put a wad of tissue in the front so if the tape gets bad he will still have the protection with the toilet paper.

Ugh! Eventually we had enough and decided to buy a different pair. I searched on amazon and I came across these boots. Read the reviews. And they seemed great. Now let me mention that these look identical to the first pair. But you can tell just in the picture that these are so much better made.
