The patchouli plant is part of the mint family and native to the tropical regions of Asia. Growing about 2.5 feet in height it is a small bushy plant with small purple-white flowers. Patchouli oil helps ground and balance emotions and was widely used in the 60s by hippies to mask the smell of marijuana.
“When most people think of 1960s hippies, they stereotypically see a long-haired, patchouli-scented, shabbily garbed guy meditating cross-legged in a psychedelically painted room, a marijuana joint dangling from his lips and Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” blaring,” John Anthony Moretta The Hippies: A 1960s History.
Patchouli essential oil is extracted from the dry leaves of the patchouli plant through a process called steam distillation.
The chemical constituents of patchouli oil are b-patchoulene, a-guaiene, caryophyllene, a-patchoulene, seychellene, a-bulnesene, norpatchoulenol, patchouli alcohol and pogostol.

Using oils “neat” or undiluted can cause problems to even the healthiest person you know. These volatile oils can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation as well as other problems if not properly diluted!
