Eucalyptus Essential Oil: The amazing benefits and what I use it for!

Hearing the word Eucalyptus, most people think Australia and Koala Bears. What I think is refreshing, soothing, and cool.

The Eucalyptus tree (aka Tasmanian Blue Gum ) is a type of evergreen tree native to Australia! And, the Eucalyptus leaves are the main source of food for Koala Bears. But people don’t realize that Eucalyptus has an oil in its leaves that plays an important role in the medical field!

Dating back to the mid 1800’s Eucalyptus Essential oil has been used in medical practice as an antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti inflammatory, as well as many other purposes.

How I use Eucalyptus Essential Oil!

Growing up I got sick. A lot. Cough, cold, throat, chest congestion, bronchitis. You name it! I also suffer/ed from asthma. My sister also! When we were sick my mom would be the humidifier on in our room at night, with Eucalyptus Essential Oil. I still do this when I get sick as an adult. Actually Mike, my husband, is sick right now. I have had the diffuser going with essential oils all night and day. He woke up feeling better but still under the weather. But he was able to go to work today ! YAY! I’m using the recipe which you can find here!

I happen to use Eucalyptus essential oil for cleaning as well. Since it has antiseptic and antibacterial properties it works great to kill a multitude of germs and bacteria. Actually hubby is sick, so I have Eucalyptus essential oil in my spray bottle with water and isopropyl alcohol. I have been cleaning and sanitizing door handles, light switches, sinks and toilets. All the important points of contact. This is something I always do when my husband or I are sick. If not the germs will spread to everyone!

How do you get Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Essential Oil is extracted from the dried leaves of the Eucalyptus tree by steam distillation. This process is when steam is passed through the dried leaves of the eucalyptus tree which makes the leaves secrete their oil.

Can you use Eucalyptus oil in the house with young children? In the diffuser ? And do you think diffusing it is what helps with asthma? Sorry for all the questions! I am very interested in essential oils, but very clueless too!

    • I don’t see a problem with diffusing it around children. it is in children’s vicks and other commercial medicines. And I do believe it helps with asthma. It helps my asthma. make sure the essential oil is 100% pure and natural. and if you have any concerns please contact your physician or child’s pediatrician

I love eucalyptus! I never thought about adding it to my cleaner. I bet it wouldn’t smell great with lemon.

  • I grew up next to a field of eucalyptus trees and the smell always reminds me of home. I like to do the same, put some oil in a spray bottle and mist around the house 🙂

  • I never really thought about eucalyptus being fresh – it’s certainly not something that grows here in Canada. But to me, the smell means Vicks vapor rub – so it’s a comforting ‘you’re sick, but you’ll feel better soon’ smell. I think it would be nice to try the essential oil in my home.
